A few days ago, I messaged some girlfriends telling them I wanted us to take a weekend getaway. Although we have done a getaway a few years ago, we often come up with the ideas of going somewhere again and fail to execute time after time. Granted, it is difficult to coordinate schedules, but still. It’s a vacation, not a world peace summit. A few days later I stumbled across the article https://www.huffingtonpost.com/kari-kubiszyn-kampakis/why-women-need-their-girlfriends_b_5539150.html?ncid=engmodushpmg00000003 while browsing the internet. The article emphasized the importance of maintaining your relationships with your girlfriends. “The older you get, the more you’ll need them.”
I’ve always known the importance of nurturing those relationships. To be honest that may have been because I have been single most of my adult life. But even during the times I was dating someone, I still made it a point to see them. Even if I was accompanied by the person I was dating. I try to see them as often as possible. I know they are the people who will be around always. Men and women have come and gone, but my close girlfriends are a constant. They’re with me to share good times, like dinner, dancing, vineyards, and concerts. We laugh hysterically, including over my crazy stories. They are my light when I am lost. They’re there to pick me up when I am down. And I’m there to do the same. They’re there to reflect the truth of my situation, even when I don’t want to hear it. They know me to the core – how I think, how I feel, and who I truly am. Our relationship only grows stronger as time goes on, so it makes sense that I would need them more and more as I grow older because they would have become even more integrated into my life and who I am. I will need them even more through life’s triumphs and challenges. So, don’t forget about your best girlfriends even if you find a significant other or husband!
I love you! You’re a part of me, and I’m a part of you whether you like it or not! 😉 Pack your bags ladies. We’re off!
